Guns N’ Roses bass player Duff McKagan says the band’s songs are the true winners

Guns N’ Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Beastie Boys were among the inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Saturday (April 14) in Cleveland, Ohio, and the night brought out plenty of rock stars. Guns N’ Roses boys Slash, Duff McKagan, Steven Adler, Matt Sorum and Gilby Clarke were in attendance, and they pulled out three GN’R “Appetite for Destruction” tracks during the induction ceremony with Alter Bridge’s Myles Kennedy on vocals. The guys busted through “Mr. Brownstone,” “Sweet Child O’ Mine” and “Paradise City.”

During his acceptance speech, McKagan said that Guns N’ Roses’ legendary songs were the real stars. “As we progressed, more and more fans came, and they were relating to these songs,” he said. “I don’t know if they were relating to us so much, but the songs spoke to them. And I don’t know if it matters who’s here tonight, because it’s about the music that band creates.”

Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong gave the induction speech for Guns N’ Roses. “The first time I saw Guns N’ Roses on MTV, I thought, ‘One of these guys could end up dead or in jail,’” he joked. He went on to call “Appetite for Destruction” the “best debut album in the history of rock and roll. Every song hits hard. It takes you a trip to the seedy world of Los Angeles. The thing that set them apart from everyone else was guts. They never lost their edge for one second.” Armstrong also praised GN’R frontman Axl Rose, who declined attendance to the ceremony, calling him, “one of the best frontmen to ever touch a microphone.” Watch a clip of Guns N’ Roses’ induction, below.
