Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain Didn’t Record Any Solo Music, Says Butch Vig
Nirvana producer puts a nix to the rumor that Kurt Cobain solo recordings exist
Last week, Hole guitarist Eric Erlandson made big news when he divulged that Kurt Cobain was working on a solo album at the time of his passing in 1994. Erlandson said that he was “really excited” about some of the stuff Cobain had going and also hinted that those unreleased solo tracks are probably still around, waiting to be unveiled.
For Nirvana fans, the story sounded almost too good to be true. And now, it looks like it was. Longtime Nirvana producer Butch Vig has told NME that even if Cobain was working on some solo material, that Cobain’s ideas never actualized into anything; not even demo recordings. “He was working on songs, but they were just in his head,” Vig said. “He might have just played some songs to Eric… “
What’s more, Vig says Cobain was more interested in his wife’s band, Hole, than Nirvana or his own solo ideas at that point in his life. “Around that time period he only wanted to talk about Courtney’s album,” he said. “I never heard any of his new songs.”
In other Nirvana news, Vig is currently working with Nirvana drummer and Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl and Nirvana bass player Krist Novoselic on some music that will be featured in the upcoming documentary for Los Angeles’ Sound City Studios. “It’s a work in progress,” Vig said of working with Grohl and Novoselic. “We’re not really sure how it’s all gonna end up at this point but it’s been fun. There’s still quite a bit more work to do and we hope to finish up in the next three or four months, and try get it all mixed and completed sometime in the fall.”
