Coldplay Guitarist Talks Upcoming Tour, Loving Radiohead
Coldplay’s Jonny Buckland says Radiohead is a better band than Coldplay
Coldplay are known for selling out arenas in a jiffy with their melodic rock show, and when the band tours North America this summer, fans can bank on getting an “interactive” visual show. Speaking with the New Zealand Herald, guitarist Jonny Buckland explained that the band’s goal with this latest trek is to create an intimate experience, even in a huge venue.
“When you go to see [the show], it feels like you are part of something,” Buckland said. “You’re not just going to look at four idiots up on stage, you really feel like you’re stepping into something, like you’re in something.”
Buckland says the band’s ideas for the upcoming tour came about while they were recording their latest full-length, “Mylo Xyloto.” “The idea was to make the most visual album we’d ever made, to think of it visually, so every song had a place and almost filmic quality,” he said. “So it is more of a sort of conceptual album, and all that sort of rubbish.”
Buckland went on to sing the praises of fellow British rockers Radiohead. When asked who was the better band, Radiohead or Coldplay, he answered unequivocally, “Radiohead,” adding in a humble tone, “No, I mean really, they are. They are great.”
Coldplay kick off their much-anticipated North American tour on June 22 at American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. Find a complete list of summer 2012 tour dates on the alternative rock band’s official website.
