Incubus singer says band’s debut album doesn’t fit their current vibe

Hardcore fans of Incubus likely own the band’s entire catalog, from their debut “Fungus Amongus” to 2011’s “If Not Now, When?” But fans who hit up the band’s current co-headlining Honda Civic Tour with Linkin Park should note that the setlist won’t include any “Fungus Amongus” tracks. Singer Brandon Boyd says the band doesn’t plan to play any songs off the 1995 release, since that collection of songs doesn’t really fit with the group’s current sound.

“A lot of that stuff [on ‘Fungus Amongus’] was us learning how to write music together and be a band, but as well filter the music that we were obsessed with at the time,” Boyd told Red Eye Chicago. “So, that was everything from Led Zeppelin and the Doors to Primus and Mr. Bungle and Red Hot Chili Peppers and Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, Nirvana, Alice in Chains. It was a pungent, I’ll say, time in music. And we were 14, 15 years old when a lot of that stuff was happening… I never thought that it would catch any traction or see the light of day.”

Boyd added that people haven’t forgotten that album, which is a surprise to him. “What’s funny is people are still asking for a lot of those songs,” he said. “We’re very happy that they exist, but we just as soon let them exist in recordings. I don’t even know if we’d know how to play them.”

The Honda Civic Tour runs through Sept. 10 in San Diego, Calif. Boyd has said the guys of Incubus will go on hiatus after they wrap up the tour but plan to use the time off to start writing music for their next album. (Photo credit: Anne Erickson.)
