Three Days Grace, ‘Chalk Outline’ – Song Review
Modern rockers Three Days Grace blend angst-y lyrics and catchy riffs in ‘Chalk Outline’
Three Days Grace’s new single, “Chalk Outline,” has sat at the No. 1 spot on Nielsen’s BDS Radio Active Rock Chart for 10 weeks at this point, so something about the song has obviously struck a chord with rock listeners. “Chalk Outline” appears on Three Days Graces latest album, “Transit of Venus,” and the track is reflective of the entire album, which carries themes of struggle, heartbreak and growing up.
Lyrically, frontman Adam Gontier strikes the song with his usual arsenal of angst and passion, singing as a jilted lover who is forever changed after his significant other left him. “You left me here like a chalk outline / On the sidewalk waiting for the rain to wash away, wash away / You keep coming back to the scene of the crime / But the dead can’t speak and there’s nothing left to say anyway,” he croons.
Musically, Gontier and guitarist Barry Stock’s guitars make the track fly, with appropriately chalk-y sounding guitar riffing and a steady beat that makes the song near-danceable. Combined with drummer Neil Sanderson’s steady rhythms, “Chalk Outline” is a solid modern rock anthem that few should be surprised to see topping the charts.
Sanderson told Audio Ink Radio of “Chalk Outline” and the new album, “Transit of Venus,” “We definitely have those moments in the record about growing up, because you never really stop growing up. We’re getting older, but we’re still growing into something else, so I find the themes are similar whether you’re 35 or 15. Those kinds of themes can reflect the lives of a lot of people, not just teenagers.”
Audio Ink Rating: 4 out of 5 Guitars
