Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl will serve as the keynote speaker for the 2013 South by Southwest Music Festival

Perhaps nobody is better versed in popular rock music than Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, so it’s appropriate that the famed South by Southwest (SXSW) Festival has announced Grown as the keynote speaker for the 2013 edition. Grohl will give his speech on Thursday, March 14, 2013, at the Austin Convention Center.

“Dave Grohl’s ascension to legendary status as one of the most beloved and respected figures on the international music scene goes back to his joining the DC-based punk rock band Scream at the age of 17,” festival organizers said in an official statement. “Three years and much international touring later, Grohl became drummer for Nirvana, making his recorded debut with them on 1991?s generation-defining Nevermind.”

SXSW 2013 is set for March 12 through 17. For more on the festival, head to SXSW’s official website.

In other Grohl news, the frontman and drummer is back with Queens of the Stone Age, lending a helping hand with their new album. Grohl has also kept busy working on the upcoming “Sound City: Real to Reel” documentary as a feature documentary director and producer. The movie documents the history behind the celebrated California studio where artists such as Nirvana, Metallica, Weezer, Neil Young, Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mad, Johnny Cash and more have recorded albums. Grohl famously first recorded at Sound City in 1991, when Nirvana laid down tracks for their sophomore breakthrough album, “Nevermind.” (Photo credit: Steve Gullick.)
