The Lumineers, ‘Ho Hey’ – Song Review

Folk-rock trio the Lumineers bring simplicity and heart to their current single, ‘Ho Hey’

It’s not a hyperbole to say the Lumineers are one of the biggest breakout groups in the alternative rock genre this year. The folk-rock trio out of Denver are currently No. 2 on Nielsen’s BDS Radio Alternative Chart with their quirky, acoustic hit “Ho Hey,” which appears on the group’s 2012 self-titled debut, and their popularity seems to be mounting.

Let’s cut to the chase: Lumineers lead singer and guitarist Wesley Schultz sounds an awful lot like Raine Maida from Our Lady Peace. That’s not a bad observation, especially since Our Lady Peace is one of the bands who was at the forefront of the alternative movement back in the ‘90s.

“Ho Hey” starts with whispy, organic mandolin and guitar strumming and cheery chanting in the background. Schultz breaks in with yearning lyrics: “I’ve been trying to do it right / I’ve been living a lonely life / I’ve been sleeping here instead / I’ve been sleeping in my bed / Sleeping in my bed.”

The song picks up quickly, and the chorus soon kicks in with faster guitar plunking and swirling sonics. Schultz’s vocals switch from plaintive and longing to upbeat and  speedy: “I belong with you, you belong with me / You’re my sweetheart / I belong with you, you belong with me / You’re my sweet!”

The Lumineers are a very simple-sounding band, but it’s darn refreshing to sit back and take in some genuine, straightforward music that comes from the heart. With spirit and feel, “Ho Hey” is one of the strongest alternative songs of the year.
