Sir Paul to sub for late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain tonight at ’12-12-12’ concert

Former Beatle Paul McCartney is slated to front a Nirvana reunion tonight (Dec. 12), with Sir Paul stepping in for late singer Kurt Cobain. The show will bring the surviving members of the legendary grunge band — Foo Fighters singer and Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl and Nirvana bass player Krist Novoselic — together for the first time in 20 years. Expect to hear a new Nirvana tune from McCartney, Grohl and Novoselic, to boot.

So, what’s the occasion? Charity, of course! The gig will take place at tonight’s “12-12-12 — The Concert for Sandy Relief” benefit show for the victims for Hurricane Sandy.

McCartney has apparently been working with Grohl and Novoselic on the down low for quite a while. As for how the group got together, McCartney says he called Dave, who asked him to come along to “jam with some mates,” according to the Sun.

So, they all jammed together, along with Foo Fighters guitarist Pat Smear, and McCartney didn’t even know he was playing with Nirvana. “I didn’t really know who they were,” he told the Sun. “They are saying how good it is to be back together. I said ‘Whoa? You guys haven’t played together for all that time?’ And somebody whispered to me ‘That’s Nirvana. You’re Kurt.’ I couldn’t believe it.”
