Dave Grohl says those rejected from reality TV singing shows should take a lesson from Neil Young

Like many professional musicians, Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl isn’t into the whole reality TV singing competition phenomenon. Grohl says the panel of judges on programs such as “American Idol” and “The Voice” are too tough on contestants, when the judges don’t have the legs to stand on when it comes to their own music.

“I think people should feel encouraged to be themselves,” Grohl told NME. “That’s what bums me out about those shows where people are judged so harshly by … musicians that hardly even play an instrument on their own … albums. It makes me really mad.”

Grohl added that anyone who has been rejected from a reality TV show shouldn’t let the harsh words stop them from pursuing a career in music. “I interviewed Neil Young and he said in his band someone said to him, ‘The band’s really great, but honestly you shouldn’t be the singer,’” Grohl said. “If Neil Young had listened to that person then we wouldn’t have had any Neil Young.” In other words, tell them to get lost, and don’t let anybody stop you from finding your destiny.
