Former White Stripes frontman Jack White saves hometown venue from foreclosure

Jack White has often praised his hometown of Detroit, and now, he’s putting his money into the city, too. The former White Stripes frontman has been identified as the anonymous donor who paid the $142,000 in taxes that enabled Detroit’s Masonic Temple to avoid foreclosure, according to a report by the Detroit Free Press. In honor of the singer and guitarist’s charitable donation, the Temple’s Cathedral Theater is being renamed the Jack White Theater.

“Jack’s donation could not have come at a better time and we are eternally grateful to him for it,” Roger Sobran, president of the Detroit Masonic Temple Association, told the Free Press. “Jack’s magnanimous generosity and unflinching loyalty to this historic building and his Detroit roots is appreciated beyond words.”

The Jack White Theater is 27,878 square feet and has a capacity of 1,586 people. “We could not be more humbled to bestow this honor on Jack,” Sobran stated of the renaming.

White, of course, has played the Masonic Temple a handful of times. He also often visited the concert hall as a child, since his mom served as an usher at the venue.

Anyone else who would like to donate to the the Detroit Masonic Temple can do so via the venue’s official website by clicking on the “Support the Temple” tab.
