Thom York on Radiohead’s Future: ‘I So Wish I Had a Plan’

Radiohead frontman says he doesn’t know where the future of the band will lead

Radiohead fans are itching for new music, but if you ask frontman Thom Yorke about the progress of the band’s new album, he doesn’t know what to say.

When asked about the future of the band in an interview with Interview magazine, Yorke stated, “I so wish I had a plan.” He added, “The only plan that we’ve had recently was to take a year off, which was something that [guitarist] Ed [O’Brien] wanted to do.  Ed wanted to go live somewhere else and switch off.”

York is occupied right now with his other band, Atoms for Peace. The group just set off on a tour in support of their current album, “Amok,” and they play a short U.S. run in September. Yorke says juggling side projects such as Atoms for Peace helps keep him creative. “That’s absolutely it,” he said. “I mean, try to imagine this: I’ve essentially been writing music and playing with the same guys since I was 16.”

Yorke says since many Radiohead fans aren’t even aware he’s a part of Atoms for Peace, which makes for an interesting dynamic. “It’s been a weird build-up because in calling it not me — in calling it another thing — people don’t necessarily make the connection, which is kind of mad,” he said. “So it’s been sort of like starting again with a band and trying to say to people, ‘This is this thing.’ And then I can’t really explain it either because it’s not really a band.”
