The mayor of Hoquiam has declared April 10 Nirvana Day

Late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain spent a short time as a child in the city of Hoquiam, Wash., and now, the city is planning to give Cobain and Nirvana some special honors. On April 10, Hoquiam will celebrate Nirvana Day, according to the Washington newspaper The Daily World. It’s the same day Nirvana will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 2014 class.

“I just think we need to recognize accomplishments by a band that has spoken to a different generation than mine, certainly, but it’s well-known throughout the world,” Hoquiam mayor Jack Durney said in a statement while announcing the plan for Nirvana Day a city council meeting.  “He and Krist [Novoselic], the entire Nirvana band, have accomplished a great deal. They should be honored, and we should be proud of them.”

Nirvana were originally from Aberdeen, Wash., which is adjacent to Hoquiam. The band released their debut album, “Bleach,” on Sub Pop in 1989 and eventually sold over 25 million albums in the United States and over 75 million around the world.
