U2 to Receive Sonny Bono Visionary Award

U2 will pick up the Sonny Bono Visionary Award for their humanitarian work

Rockers U2 will receive the Sonny Bono Visionary Award at the 25th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival’s 2014 Awards Gala, which happens tonight (Jan. 4) at California’s Palm Springs Convention Center. Harold Matzner, festival chairman, said U2 deserves the honor thanks to the group’s “unparalleled humanitarian work against extreme poverty, disease and social injustice,” in a statement.

“We normally present the Sonny Bono Visionary Award to a director, but for our 25th anniversary we wanted to take the occasion to celebrate U2, a visionary group and the world’s premier rock band,” Matzner added.

Matzner also commented that U2’s new song, “Ordinary Love,” which was penned for the film “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom,” is “an ode to Nelson Mandela, who had such a powerful impact on our world, and a man whom the band worked with in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Africa.”

On the subject of “Ordinary Love,” a new official music video for the song has debuted via U2’s official website and U2’s official YouTube channel. Watch the video below.
