College Radio Day Celebrates Independent Student Radio

The fourth annual College Radio Day takes place today (Oct. 3)

College radio offers an alternative to commercial radio with a freeform, non-corporate approach to programming and a selection of independent music that fans won’t hear anywhere else. In that spirit, today (Oct. 3) marks the fourth annual College Radio Day, which serves to unite college radio stations around the world to raise awareness of and celebrate this integral medium for new music and innovative content.

More than 700 college and high school stations in 43 countries will participate in this year’s College Radio Day. Organizers have put together a 24-hour live “Global Marathon” with 24 different college radio stations that will be broadcast live and streamed online, one each per hour. The broadcast is powered by Live365 and hosted by KCWU-FM (88.1 The “Burg”) at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Wash.

College Radio Day is “a reminder that, despite some stations being sold off, college radio is still alive and kicking,” College Radio Day President Peter Kreten said in a release.

Last year, even President Obama got onboard, sending a letting to participating college radio stations, stating, “Uniting audiences across languages and borders, World College Radio Day celebrates the students who power these stations and the unique role college radio plays across the globe.”
