Frances Bean Cobain Discusses Her Father, Kurt Cobain
Frances Bean Cobain says ‘Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck’ reminds her of the similarities she shares with her late father
Kurt Cobain’s daughter Frances Bean Cobain is an executive producer on the first fully authorized documentary about the late Nirvana frontman, “Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck.” Speaking with Rolling Stone, Frances called the movie “emotional journalism.”
“It’s the closest thing to having Kurt tell his own story in his own words — by his own aesthetic, his own perception of the world,” she explained. “It paints a portrait of a man attempting to cope with being a human.”
While Frances dropped the news she isn’t a big fan of Nirvana’s music (she’s more into Oasis, Mercury Rev and Brian Jonestown Massacre), she does dig a few songs especially well. One of those is “Dumb.”
“I cry every time I hear that song,” she said, regarding “Dumb.” “It’s a stripped-down version of Kurt’s perception of himself — of himself on drugs, off drugs, feeling inadequate to be titled the voice of a generation.”
Frances said watching “Montage of Heck” reminds her that she and Kurt share some of the same traits. She recalled Nirvana’s band members noticing the resemblance, too.
“Dave (Grohl), Krist (Novoselic) and Pat (Smear) came over to a house where I was living,” Frances remembers. “It was the first time (the former Nirvana members) had been together in a long time. And they had what I call the ‘K. C. Jeebies,’ which is when they see me, they see Kurt. They look at me, and you can see they’re looking at a ghost.”
“Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck” will be screened in select U.S. theaters April 24. The movie will play on HBO May 4.
