Def Leppard’s Phil Collen Launches New Band with STP’s Robert DeLeo
Stone Temple Pilots bass player is part of Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen’s latest project
Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen loves the blues, and he’s using that drive to form a new blues music project called Delta Deep, with a self-titled debut album set to arrive this summer.
Delta Deep includes Stone Temple Pilots bass player Robert DeLeo, vocalist Debbi Blackwell-Cook and drummer Forrest Robinson. Aside from the main lineup, the upcoming album features a long list of rock royalty, including Def Leppard singer Joe Elliot; Whitesnake’s David Coverdale; Sex Pistols and Manraze drummer Paul Cook; and Girl and Manraze bassplayer Simon Laffy.
Collen got the idea for the project in 2012, when he and Cook – who is the godmother of Collen’s wife, Helen – sang some blues tunes together at home. Then, the two started to work on original music and recorded some songs in Collen’s home studio. The other contributors got involved as the project matured. Robinson suggested to add DeLeo to the lineup, and it proved the perfect addition.
“We really wanted Robert in this band,” Collen said in a stement. “He had the added firepower of being the premiere pioneer and most “badass bass player” to come out of the alternative rock explosion.”
Delta Deep the album will arrive June 23.
