John Lennon’s Gibson J-160E pulled in major cash at auction last weekend

One of the prized acoustic guitars that John Lennon used to pen some of the Beatles’ biggest songs sold at auction last weekend and pulled in major cash.

Julien’s Auctions has revealed that the Gibson J-160E guitar took in 2.4 million dollars and was sold on Saturday (Nov. 7) to an undisclosed buyer. Julien’s says that price breaks a “world record” but doesn’t specify whether that world record is for a guitar, Beatles memorabilia or something else.

According to Julien’s, Lennon and George Harrison each bought a jumbo J-160E Gibson acoustic guitar in 1962. Lennon used his guitar to pen the tunes “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” “She Loves You” and “All My Loving,” among others. The auction house also states the guitar had been missing for more than 50 years.

The auction also included a drum head Ringo Starr used when the Beatles appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1965, which fetched just over 2.1 million, and the sweater Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain sported during the band’s MTV Unplugged appearance back in December of 1993, which took in $137,500.
