Chris Cornell says the short-lived grunge band Temple of the Dog was a labor of friendship

Chris Cornell appears in a recent episode of Live Nation’s “Set List” web series, speaking about how his work with Soundgarden influences his solo music and more. In the 13-minute clip, Cornell also talks about his time in the brief but beloved grunge supergroup Temple of the Dog, which featured Cornell, Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder, Mike McCready, Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament and Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron.

Not only does the interview feature a chat with Cornell, but it also shows some previously unreleased footage of Temple of the Dog playing their single “Say Hello 2 Heaven” at Seattle’s Moore Theater in 1990.

“Me and all of my friends were kind of balancing this notion of artistic integrity and sort of sticking to who we are as creative musicians and songwriters versus clear opportunity to have commercial and financial success,” Cornell said of Temple of the Dog. “We wrote these songs with no intention of them being commercially successful, and now they are. Is that a bad thing?”

Temple of the Dog released only one album in 1991 before the band members went their separate ways in Pearl Jam and Soundgarden.

Cornell most recently released a new solo album, “Higher Truth.” He’s currently on the road in support of the release, which includes stop in North America and around the world.
