Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell Pays Tribute to Scott Weiland

Chris Cornell honored Scott Weiland during a show last weekend in Australia

Scott Weiland, best known as the frontman for post-grunge band Stone Temple Pilots and Guns N’ Roses supergroup Velvet Revolver, passed away last week at the age of 48, and the tributes from his contemporaries continue to pour in.

During a concert in Australia last weekend, Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell performed Temple of the Dog’s “Say Hello 2 Heaven” and dedicated it to Weiland. Fan-recorded audio of the song is posted on YouTube.

The tribute was very appropriate, as Cornell wrote “Say Hello 2 Heaven” back in the ‘90s as a tribute to Andrew Wood, who fronted grunge rock band Mother Love Bone. Wood passed away in 1990 following an overdose on heroin. Members of Mother Love Bone went on to form Pearl Jam, and Temple of the Dog brought together the members of Pearl Jam, as well as Cornell. Weiland also had a very public struggle with addiction, including heroin.

Another grunge band also honored Weiland following the news of his passing, but in a very different way. Nirvana tweeted out a simple and beautiful tribute, “Thanks for the great music Scott Weiland.”
