P.O.D. mashes hip-hop and reggae in new song, ‘Soundboy Killa’

San Diego’s P.O.D. have remained out of the spotlight for much of this year, but that just changed. The Christian rap-rockers have released a new song named “Soundboy Killa,” and the song and companion lyric video is streaming now via YouTube.

“Rock ‘n roll has become entertainment that just says what the consumer wants to hear,” frontman Sonny Sandoval told Alternative Press of the track “Soundboy Killa.” “There’s no more edge or rebellion that sets it apart from the norm. We choose to be us and write songs that we love playing, rather than trying to keep up with trends or what’s hot on the scene.”

“Lyrically, it’s a take off (of) some of the old hip hop and reggae classics that I love,” he added. “‘Soundboy Killa’ is classic P.O.D. guitar riff power, headbanging groove with the lyrical attitude and edge missing in today’s music.”

P.O.D.’s last studio album was 2015’s “The Awakening.” No word yet on whether the guys plan to release a new, full album soon, but “Soundboy Killa” is the first bit of original material from P.O.D. since “The Awakening.”

“Soundboy Killa” will be available for digital download on Sept. 8.

P.O.D. will set off on their Soundboy Killaz tour starting Sept. 6 in Baltimore.
