Jared Leto and Thirty Seconds to Mars Honor Chester Bennington at VMAs

Thirty Seconds to Mars has been teasing fans for months about new music, and now, Jared Leto and company are back with a new song. “Walk on Water,” a fiery, big-sounding rock anthem, is current streaming via YouTube and available at digital outlets.

The lyric video for “Walk on Water” is also on YouTube and features footage from Thirty Seconds to Mars’ “A Day in the Life of America” project, where the guys asked fans from all over the world to film their Fourth of July this year.

Leto calls “Walk on Water” – which has already been tapped to soundtrack the upcoming college football season on ESPN – a “song for all of us.”

“It’s a song about freedom, about persistence, about change and about fighting for what you believe in,” Leto said in an official statement.

“It is a call to arms but also full of all the optimism and hope that is such an integral part of the American Dream,” he added.

“Walk on Water” is the first track to arrive off Thirty Seconds to Mars’ upcoming, fifth album. The new set marks the band’s follow-up to 2013’s “Love, Lust, Faith and Dreams.”

Leto and Thirty Seconds to Mars also performed at the MTV Video Music Awards last night (Aug. 27). At the VMAs, Leto paid tribute to late Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington. Thirty Seconds to Mars and Linkin Park toured together, and Leto and Bennington were friends.

“I remember his heart, which he wore on his sleeve,” Leto said on the VMA stage. “And I remember his voice, at once ferocious and delicate. That voice will live forever.”

He added, “If there is anyone out there watching this who feels like there is no out, hear me now: you are not alone. I promise you this: the absolute biggest breakthroughs in life lie just beyond the darkest days.”
