Rivers Cuomo explains his mumble rap phase

Rivers Cuomo has nothing against rap music. After all, the Weezer frontman performed on the B.o.B. song “Magic,” and rapper Lil Wayne made an appearance on the 2009 Weezer record “Ratitude.”

That said, Cuomo experimented with a very particular kind of rap when working on Weezer’s latest record, “Pacific Daydream.” Believe it or not, he got into mumble rap.

“It felt so creative and mind-boggling,” Cuomo said in a new interview with Billboard, in reference to the genre. Future and Desiigner are examples of mumble rap.

“I was listening to it all the time, and then I’d go to write a song and I’m doing mumble rap,” he added. “And I’m like, ‘This is awesome!’ But I’d send it around to everybody and they’re like, ‘This is horrible!'”

With that imput from his peers, Cuomo exercised some self-discipline and avoided releasing any mumble rap on “Pacific Daydream.” But he and the guys of Weezer still made the album fresh and different.

“(I wanted to) break away from who we are and what we have always done and try to figure out something that’s totally different but incredibly amazing,” he said.

Fans won’t have to wait much longer to hear the “totally different” tunes on “Pacific Daydream.” The new album, which also featured the popular single “Feels Like Summer,” will arrive Oct. 27.
