Dee Snider to Appear on Broadway in ‘Rocktopia’
Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider will appear on the upcoming Broadway run of ‘Rocktopia’
Dee Snider is making his way to Broadway. The Twisted Sister frontman will join the Broadway concert production of “Rocktopia” as a special guest vocalist during the fourth week of the show’s engagement, April 9 through 15. “Rocktopia,” which begins its run at the Broadway Theatre tonight (March 27), is a special concert event that blends the works of classic artists, such as Mozart and Beethoven, with the blockbuster rock ‘n’ roll of veterans such as Journey, Queen, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin and U2.
This isn’t Snider’s first brush with Broadway. He performed the role of “Dennis” in the Tony-nominated Broadway production of “Rock of Ages,” which featured his hit songs, “I Wanna Rock” and “We’re Not Gonna Take It.” Snider, of course, also has a successful syndicated radio show called “House of Hair,” which is celebrating 20 years this year.
“Rocktopia” co-producer Rob Evan recently spoke with Audio Ink Radio about the show’s Broadway debut. He says classical music has more in common with modern rock than one might think.
We wanted to take what the masters wrote and fuse those with classic rock, and we found a commonality between these two worlds,” Evan said. “We started developing this project eight years ago. We felt that if Beethoven and Mozart were alive today, they would be our rock stars.”
“I think catalogs like Zeppelin and Pink Floyd and Queen are going to resound way beyond our lifetimes,” he added. “I’m watching my kids now roll back around to classic rock, because they love these giant hooks that they write. Beethoven wrote giant hooks, too.”
During his run on “Rocktopia,” Snider will be backed by a five-piece rock band, a 30-person choir and a 20-piece orchestra. Vocalists appearing in “Rocktopia” comes from everywhere from the Trans-Siberian Orchestra to Green Day’s “American Idiot” to the Metropolitan Opera. For information on the run, visit Rocktopia.com.
