Black Sabbath Scores Lifetime Achievement Award from Recording Academy

Metal greats Black Sabbath will receive Lifetime Achievement Award during the Recording Academy’s Special Merit Awards in May

Congratulations are in order, as Black Sabbath have been tapped to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award during the Recording Academy’s Special Merit Awards, set for May 11 in Los Angeles. The heavy metal legends are one of seven recipients of the award, which honors “performers who have made outstanding contributions of artistic significance to the field of recording.” Sabbath was chosen for having “arguably invented the heavy metal signposts and influenced every heavy rock band that followed.”

“Each year, the Recording Academy has the distinct privilege of celebrating music industry giants who have greatly contributed to our cultural heritage,” Recording Academy President/CEO Neil Portnow said in a statement. “This year, we have a gifted and brilliant group of honorees and their exceptional accomplishments, contributions, and artistry will continue to influence and inspire generations to come.”

Alongside Sabbath, other recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award next May include R&B legend Dionne Warwick, funk performers George Clinton & Parliament-Funkadelic, late jazz and soul vocalists Billy Eckstine and Donny Hathaway, Latin performer Julio Iglesias and soul duo Sam & Dave.

Black Sabbath performed their final show in February of 2017, closing out their massive “The End” tour. Since performing that last show, frontman Ozzy Osbourne has been touring with his solo band on his No More Tours 2 trek.
