Queen Biopic ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ Picks Up Two Major Golden Globe Awards

“Bohemian Rhapsody” has been crowned Best Motion Picture — Drama and actor Rami Malek has received the Best Actor in a Drama award
Queen biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” was nominated for two major Golden Globe awards this year, and on Sunday night (Jan. 8), the film scored both of those trophies at the 2019 ceremony. The wins were somewhat of a surprise, as they edged out high-profile favorites in each category.
The film, which is centered on the life of Queen’s famed frontman Freddie Mercury, picked up the award for Best Motion Picture — Drama, making it one of the biggest surprises of the night, edging out “Black Panther,” “BlacKkKlansman,” “If Beale Street Could Talk” and “A Star Is Born.”
In addition, Rami Malek, who plays the role of the late, great Mercury, received the award for Best Actor in a Drama. Malek’s detailed and accurate portrayal of Mercury has earned him major props from fans and critics since “Bohemian Rhapsody” premiered last year. He was up against Bradley Cooper for his role in “A Star Is Born,” “Willem DaFoe for At Eternity’s Gate,” Lucas Hedges in “Boy Erased” and John David Washington in “BlackKklansman.”
“Thank you to Freddie Mercury for giving me the joy of a lifetime,” said Malek, who seemed overjoyed and surprised to pick up the award, at the podium. “I love you, you beautiful man! This is for — and because of — you, gorgeous!”
Malek also thanked Queen guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor “for ensuring that authenticity and inclusivity exists in music and in the world and all of us.”
“Thank you for showing us the power of embracing your true self,” added producer Graham King, in reference to Mercury, who passed away of AIDS in 1991.
Dexter Fletcher served as director for “Bohemian Rhapsody” halfway through the film, taking over for original director Bryan Singer, who parted ways with the production about halfway through. The film has already been named the highest-grossing music biopic of all time.
