Tom Morello first found out about Chris Cornell’s passing from his wife, and the news shocked him
Tom Morello has opened up about how he first learned of his Audioslave band mate and Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell’s sudden, tragic passing in May 2017. The news came from his wife.
“I was at home,” Morello said in an interview with BBC Radio 6. “It was, like, about one in the morning. My wife had the phone, and she had that look on her face, like, that awful look when you know that…something really bad happened.”
He added, “And I just kept saying to her, I was like, ‘Who? Who? Who?’ And then she finally said, ‘Chris Cornell.’ [And I said], ‘No! Come on. That can’t possibly be true.’ And yet it was.”
Cornell and Morello last performed together at a special, one-time Audioslave reunion concert in January 2017. Morello says Cornell seemed in fantastic spirits at that show.
“The last time I saw (Cornell), he was shining,” Morello said.
In other news, last October, Morello released a new solo album, “The Atlas Underground.” The set features a bevy of musical guests, including Rise Against’s Tim McIlrath, Mumford & Sons’ Marcus Mumford, Portugal. the Man and K. Flay, to name a new. Morello has also kept busy with Prophets of Rage, the superground that features members of Rage Against the Machine — Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk — as well as B-Real, Chuck D and DJ Lord.
