Disturbed Frontman David Draiman Wants to Sing the National Anthem at the Super Bowl
David Draiman sings in hard rock band Disturbed, but the powerful vocalist would like to use his pipes to rock the national anthem at next year’s Super Bowl
Jennifer Lopez and Shakira have been booked for the 2020 Super Bowl halftime show, but who will sing the national anthem? Last week, Billboard kicked off a fan poll asking who should sing the national anthem at the 2020 game, and Disturbed frontman David Draiman is getting in on the fun.
Last weekend, Disturbed sent out a tweet asking fans to vote for Draiman in the Super Bowl poll, and although Draiman isn’t an option on the multiple choice list, you can write the rock singer’s name in the “other” option to vote for him. The poll gives written options, including pop acts, such as Ariana Grande, Bruno Mars and Post Malone. As of Monday afternoon, the leader is Panic! at the Disco’s Brendon Urie, who’s claimed nearly 40 percent of the vote.
Lana Del Rey is in second with 33.6 percent, followed by Barbra Streisand with 11.7 percent. “Other” is in fourth place with just over three percent of the vote.
“Let’s stir it up,” the band tweeted.
Draiman might be viewed as an odd choice for the national anthem, since he usually sings such heavy songs, but the band has some major mainstream acclaim from their unexpected crossover hit: a cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence,” which the band released back in 2015. The song has been heard everywhere from “Dancing with the Stars” to Olympic figure skating performances.
In related news, Dee Snider of Twisted Sister recently took to Twitter to express his dissapointment that the Super Bowl halftime show, year after year, neglects hard rock and metal acts.
“Once again the great heavy music that rocks the stadiums week after week, game after game is completely ignored,” Snider tweeted.
The 2020 Super Bowl is scheduled for Feb. 2 at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium.
