Raconteurs Drummer Recalls Watching Nirvana’s Nevermind Tour
The Raconteurs remember Nirvana’s influence on popular music
Nirvana’s now-famous album, the grungy and groundbreaking Nevermind, celebrates its 20th anniversary on Saturday (Sept. 24), and no matter how many years pass, the sarcastic emotion of “Drain You” and opening riff of “Teen Spirit” never sound outdated. Nevermind is to thank for an entire generation of new music and the demise of glitzy, flashy ‘80s hair metal. Love or hate the grunge-rock movement, nobody can deny the fact Kurt Cobain and Nevermind succeeded in starting an entire musical crusade that’s still very alive today.
Raconteurs drummer Patrick Keeler remembers checking out Nirvana on the band’s fabled Nevermind tour. “Oh my gosh. That would be my thought,” Raconteurs drummer Patrick Keeler told Audio Ink Radio, upon the news of Nevermind’s 20th year out. “I remember when that came out very, very well, and it was a big part of me. It’s incredible that was 20 years ago. I can’t believe it’s coming up on that milestone.
“That definitely changed the way I looked at commercial music at that time, for me,” added the alternative rock performer. “I wasn’t into many new bands at that time, because nothing really appealed to me. Finally, I found something new I really loved. It changed my view of popular music from what was out at the time. I got to see them during the Nevermind tour, and that was awesome.”
Legendary rock producer Butch Vig recorded Nevermind, as well as other ‘90s releases such as the Smashing Pumpkins’ Gish and Siamese Dream. In celebration of the anniversary, Universal Music Enterprises is re-releasing Nevermind with configurations ranging from a 4-CD / 1-DVD Super Deluxe Edition to a standard digital / CD re-master of the original album, with lots of goodies in-between, including dozens of previously unreleased recordings, obscure B-sides, alternate mixes, radio sessions, studio rarities and live recordings, including a 1991 Halloween concert in Nirvana’s hometown of Seattle.
