Mastodon have announced they’ll unleash a rarities collection, called “Medium Rarities,” on Sept. 11. The Atlanta metal band has also released a new song off the set, “Fallen Torches,” which features a guest appearance by Neurosis’s Scott Kelly. The new track is available via digital outlets and may be streamed below.

“Medium Rarities” features a handful of Mastodon goodies, including classic covers, live recordings, soundtrack contributions, instrumentals and B-sides, all brought together in one massive collection.

As for the covers, Mastodon put their spin on the Feist track “A Commotion,” “Orion” by Metallica, “A Spoonful Weighs A Ton” by The Flaming Lips and the Butthole Surfers song “Atlanta.” With Mastodon being from Atlanta, the latter covers pick is appropriate. The soundtrack contributions include “White Walker” from “Game Of Thrones” and “Cut You Up With A Linoleum Knife” from “Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film For Theaters.”

The collection also features instrumental versions of “Asleep In The Deep,” “Toe To Toes,” “Jaguar God” and “Halloween.” “Medium Rarities” also marks the first time 14 of Mastodon’s songs have been available on streaming services.

“This classic Mastodon track was recorded in Atlanta in 2019, originally planned to be released in support of a European tour,” Mastodon said in a statement regarding “Fallen Torches.” “The track was delayed so the band could focus on the release of ‘Stairway To Nick John’, a tribute to (Mastodon’s) late, long time manager Nick John, with proceeds going to the Hirshberg Foundation for Pacreatic Cancer Research in his honor.”
