Eddie Van Halen Passes Away at 65
Eddie Van Halen, one of the most legendary rock guitarists of his era, has died
One of the greatest guitarist in hard rock music, Eddie Van Halen, has passed away after a lengthy fight with cancer. He was 65.
The news broke today (Oct. 6) from Eddie’s son and Van Halen bass player Wolfgang Van Halen, who tweeted out, “I can’t believe I’m having to write this, but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, has lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning. He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I’ve shared with him on and off stage was a gift.”
“My heart is broken and I don’t think I’ll ever fully recover from this loss,” he added. “I love you so much, Pop.”
Eddie and his brother, Alex, are native to the Netherlands and moved to the U.S. in 1962. The two co-founded Van Halen in the 1970s with Eddie on guitar and Alex on drums. The band’s classic lineup also features singer David Lee Roth and bass player Michael Anthony.
Van Halen went on to be one of the most successful hard rock bands out of the 1970s. The band’s self-titled debut record arrived in 1997 and hit No. 19 on the Billboard 200 chart. The band continued to release chart-topping albums and popular rock singles, such as “Jump,” which went No. 1, as well as “Runnin’ with the Devil,” “Ain’t Talkin’ ’bout Love” and “Jamie’s Cryin’,” “Dance the Night Away,” “Unchained” and “Panama.”
Eddie married actress Valerie Bertinelli in 1981 and had one son, Wolfgang. The two later got divorced. Eddie married his second wife, Janie Liszewski, in 2009.
Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with Eddie’s family during this difficult time.
