Alice Cooper Releases Velvet Underground Cover, ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll,’ Off Upcoming ‘Detroit Stories’ Album
Alice Cooper has released a cover of the Velvet Underground’s “Rock ‘n’ Roll,” which will arrive on his upcoming “Detroit Stories” album
Alice Cooper has released the first bit of new music off his upcoming studio album, “Detroit Stories,” and it’s a cover of the Lou Reed-written Velvet Underground song “Rock ‘n’ Roll.” The song is available now via digital download and on major streaming services. Cooper’s version of “Rock ‘n’ Roll” features Mitch Ryder and Detroit Wheels drummer Johnny “Bee” Badanjek, plus guest guitar work from Steve Hunter and Joe Bonamassa.
The cover of “Rock ‘n’ Roll” has some history, to boot. Decades ago, Ryder, Badanjek and Hunter performed in a band together called Detroit and recorded a cover of, you guessed it, “Rock ‘n’ Roll” in 1971. The cover was produced by Cooper’s regular producer Bob Ezrin, who also lent a helping hand with Cooper’s new version of the song and the full “Detroit Stories” record.
As the story goes, Reed also asked Ezrin to produce his 1973 album, “Berlin,” after he heard Detroit’s cover of “Rock ‘n’ Roll,” because he was so impressed with it.
Cooper calls “Detroit Stories” his tribute to the gutting hard rock of his old hometown, Detroit. The album will arrive on Feb. 26.
“Detroit Stories” is available for pre-order now. It will be available on CD, as a CD/DVD “digipak,” a two-LP set, and as a box set featuring a CD, Blu-ray, T-shirt, face mask and other special merchandise. The DVD and Blu-ray features cuts from one of Cooper’s 2017 concerts in Paris.
