Elton John Reflects on the Past Year on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Podcast
Elton John appears on the new podcast from Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle, and on the show, he hopes for “healing” in 2021
Elton John is a longtime friend of the late Princess Diana and her sons, Princes Harry and William, so he was a natural guest for Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle’s holiday special podcast, which is out now. John is one of various big-named guests who appear on the special, in addition to Stacey Abrams, Tyler Perry, James Corden, Deepak Chopra, Naomi Osaka and José Andrés.
During his section of the podcast, John discusses what was a turbulent 2020 for many. He explains that he’s been worried about his health during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, since he’s 73 years old and “semi-diabetic.” He has also missed connecting with friends during the lockdown but thanks one popular bit of modern technology for helping him stay in touch.
“Y’know, I’m a recovering alcoholic, so I have an AA meeting from this house every Sunday,” Elton said in the podcast. “I connect with my friends, who I’ve known for about 30 years in the program, and that’s great. And if it hadn’t been for Zoom, I don’t know what we would have done. I really don’t… it’s been a lifesaver.”
Looking ahead to 2021, Elton hopes the whole pandemic experience has changed people a little– for the better. “I hope after this awful pandemic has passed and we can go back to some sort of normality, that we have become better people and I hope for healing,” he said. “It’s been an awful time for people, people have lost loved ones, people who had lost their businesses, they’ve lost work…so I hope that we can heal in 2021.”
Elton John planned to tour the world in 2020 on his “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” tour, but those dates were postponed due to the pandemic. The trek has been rescheduled to kick off Sept. 1, 2021, in Berlin, Germany, and continue through a Jan. 23, 2023, date in Auckland, New Zealand. For John’s upcoming tour roster, visit EltonJohn.com.
