Foo Fighters Release Rockabilly-Tinged New Song, ‘No Son of Mine’

Dave Grohl and Foo Fighters add a rockabilly flavor to their sound in their latest track, “No Son of Mine,” off their upcoming “Medicine at Midnight” album
Foo Fighters kicked off 2021 by releasing a new song, “No Son of Mine,” which will appear on their upcoming, 10th studio album, “Medicine at Midnight.” The song marks the album’s second single and follows first single “Shame Shame,” the latter which the band debuted on “Saturday Night Live” in December and is currently No. 1 on the BDS mainstream rock radio airplay chart.
In a statement, Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl says “No Son of Mine” is “the kind of song that just resides in all of us and if it makes sense at the time, we let it out. Lyrically it’s meant to poke at the hypocrisy of self righteous leaders, people that are guilty of committing the crimes they’re supposedly against…”
Musically, “No Son of Mine” is a bit different for Foo Fighters. The song kicks off with a crunchy guitar lick and, from there, features Grohl’s usual gritty, rock ‘n’ roll vocals. What’s different is that the track’s backbeat and melodies sound slightly country-rock, with a strong rockabilly swagger. The lyrics as poignant and accusing, with Grohl blasting out, “No son of mine will ever say / Words of illusion, oh, this I pray / Heretofore taking my name in vain / No son of mine, no son of mine.”
“Medicine at Midnight” will arrive Feb. 5 via RCA / Roswell. Foo Fighters were slated to tour this year in honor of their 25th anniversary, but that tour has been canceled due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Chances are, when touring resumes, the Foo Fighters will hit the road on a tour to both celebrate the 25th anniversary of the band and promote “Medicine at Midnight.”
In other news, over Hanukkah, Grohl and “Medicine at Midnight” producer Greg Kurstin joined forces to perform a handful of cover songs, dubbed the “Hanukkah Sessions” song series. The cover tracks included Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage,” Drake’s “Hotline Bling” and The Velvet Underground’s “Rock and Roll,” among others.
