Iron Maiden, Rage Against the Machine and Foo Fighters Head Up 2021 Rock Hall Nominees
The 2021 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominees include Iron Maiden, Rage Against the Machine and Foo Fighters, among others
Foo Fighters, Iron Maiden and Rage Against the Machine among the nominees for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2021, the Rock Hall announced Wednesday morning (Feb. 10). Additional nominees for the annual honors include Jay-Z, LL Cool J, New York Dolls, Todd Rundgren, The Go-Go’s, Devo, Kate Bush, Mary J. Blige, Chaka Khan, Carole King, Fela Kuti, Tina Turner and Dionne Warwick.
To be eligible to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a musician or band needs to have released their first commercial recording 25 years before the year of their nomination. Foo Fighters hit their 25th anniversary in 2020, and Dave Grohl and company are being nominated for the first time in 2021.
Dave Grohl was previously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with ’90s grunge rockers Nirvana. If Foo Fighters are picked, Grohl will be one of the few musicians who has been inducted twice, with two different musical projects.
On the heavier side of things, this is Bruce Dickinson and Iron Maiden’s first year being nominated for induction. Metal fans often mention that Iron Maiden and Judas Priest both have yet to be inducted into the Rock Hall, with Judas Priest being nominated twice but never making it in. This is Rage Against the Machine’s second time nominated.
The 2021 Rock Hall inductees will officially be announced in May. Inductees will be picked by an international voting body comprised of more than 1,000 artists, historians and members of the music industry, according to the Rock Hall.
Fans’ voices will be heard, too, as fans are able to vote for their favorite acts to be included in fans’ ballot. The top five acts that get the most fan votes will make up a single ballot that will be included in the official count. Fans are able to vote now through April 30 via RockHall.com.
