The Go-Go’s, Gina Schock Interview – New Book + Why B-52’s and Suza Quatro Should Be in the Rock Hall
Gina Schock of The Go-Go’s joins Anne Erickson to discuss her new book, “Made in Hollywood,” and the band getting inducted into the Rock Hall in this in-depth interview
It’s been an incredibly busy year for Gina Schock. The drummer for The Go-Go’s not only released her first book, “Made In Hollywood,” but she was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, being honored for her many years with The Go-Gos.
“Made In Hollywood” is a visual account of the history of The Go-Go’s and the band’s legacy, as told by Gina. The book features a wide range of personal photographs and memorabilia she personally collected over the decades. She includes plenty of personal images that tell the story of the pioneering band’s early days of punk clubs to their height of fame.
“My favorite story is the whole story of my life and my life in The Go-Go’s, because it’s all been so magical and wonderful,” Schock tells Anne Erickson of Audio Ink Radio. “I can’t believe I’m actually getting to show this to our fans and the general public.”
What ‘Made in Hollywood’ Means to Her
“Everything in this book means something to me, because it all happened for me,” she adds. “It still doesn’t feel real. I was just this kid in Baltimore growing up in a blue-collar neighborhood with a dream, seeing bands that I loved, falling in love with music at an early age. My brother taking me to see Led Zeppelin open up for The Who was my first concert ever when I had my epiphany. I knew what I wanted to do the rest of my life. After that, every single penny that I made with my allowance, I just saved it up to buy tickets to go to concerts and buy instruments and magazines and clothes and everything that had to do with music. I was spending every penny. In this book, I recount all of that, because it’s all true, and it’s easy to go from truth.”
Following The Go-Go’s, Who Should Be in the Rock Hall?
As for getting inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame a few weeks ago, Schock says it was the experience of a lifetime. They hung out with the Foo Fighters, which she says are “the best,” plus a range of other award-winning musicians. “I can’t believe the dream of a lifetime came true, and it happened to me,” she says.
So, who should be inducted into the Rock Hall who hasn’t been yet? “The B-52’s,” Shock says. “Why are The B-52’s not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? They should hang their heads in shame, and those B-52’s should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and so should Suzi Quatro. Come on! Come on, you know? … Now we can really vote for them, so they’ve got our five votes, I’ll tell ya that, baby. B-52’s. Suza Quatro. Wow. That doesn’t make any sense to me.”
