Mark Lanegan of Screaming Trees, Queens of the Stone Age Passes Away at 57
One of grunge music’s pioneering voices, Mark Lanegan, has passed away
Former Screaming Trees frontman Mark Lanegan has passed away. Lanegan, who was also at one point a member of Queens of the Stone Age, was 57. His publicist confirmed his passing in a statement on Tuesday (Feb. 22).
“Our beloved friend Mark Lanegan passed away this morning at his home in Killarney, Ireland,” the message stated. “A beloved singer, songwriter, author and musician, he was 57 and is survived by his wife Shelley. No other information is available at this time. The family asks everyone to respect their privacy at this time.”
Back in 2020, Lanegan contracted COVID-19 and was hospitalized. He went into a coma and was expected to pass away, according to a synopsis for his book, “Devil in a Coma,” which arrived in the U.K. in 2021.
Lanegan was considered one of the pioneering voices of grunge music. He was born Mark William Lanegan in Ellensburg, Washington, on Nov. 25, 1964, and came up as the lead vocalist of grunge rock band Screaming Trees. He helped found the band in 1984 and was with them until they broke up in 2000. After his time with Screaming Trees, Lanegan performed with Queens of the Stone Age and appeared on several of their albums, including their blockbuster releases “Songs for the Deaf” and “…Like Clockwork.” Lanegan was also a prolific solo artist and released a bevy of solo albums.
