Taylor Hawkins, drummer for Foo Fighters, has passed away

The music world is in shock, as Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins has passed away at the age of 50. The news was announced late Friday (March 25) via a social media post from the band.

“The Foo Fighters family is devastated by the tragic and untimely loss of our beloved Taylor Hawkins,” the post states. “His musical spirit and infectious laughter will live on with all of us forever. Our hearts go out to his wife, children and family, and we ask that their privacy be treated with the utmost respect in this unimaginably difficult time.”

The band was currently touring overseas and was scheduled to perform in Bogota, Columbia, Friday night (March 25) at the Festival Estero Picnic. They were also slated to perform at Lollapalooza Brasil for a headlining performance Sunday (March 27) in Sao Paolo, Brazil.

Foo Fighters’ publicity camp also sent out a press release with the same statement. They did not provide a cause of death was not given. That said, the urine toxicology test indicated the presence of “THX (Marijuana), tricyclic antidepressants, benzodiazepines and opioids, among others,” a statement from the Columbian office said.

Hawkins was born Feb. 17, 1972, in Fort Worth, Texas. He didn’t stay in Texas long, as he and his family moved to Laguna Beach, California, in 1976. Hawkins started playing drums professionally at an early age, scoring gigs with the bands Sylvia and Sass Jordan.

In 1995, Hawkins landed his big break, so to speak, touring with Alanis Morissette and becoming a member of the band as she toured on her massive “Jagged Little Pill” album. On that tour, he caught the eye of Dave Grohl, who was looking for a drummer for Foo Fighters. He got in touch with Hawkins to see if he had any leads to getting a drummer for Foo Fighters, thinking Hawkins wouldn’t be interested, but Hawkins actually wanted to join the band and became an official member in 1997.

In addition to Foo Fighters, Hawkins also fronted Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders, with the group’s most latest release being 2019’s “Get the Money.” He also recently started a project with Dave Navarro and Chris Chaney.

Hawkins leaves behind a wife and three children. The staff at Audio Ink Radio sends our heartfelt condolences and prayers to Hawkins’ friends and family during this difficult time.
