Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea would love to tour with Atoms for Peace again

Flea is never one to rest on his alternative rock laurels. Sure, the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ new album, I’m With You, is another bona fide Peppers hit, capturing the energy of funk and punk rock and the band’s riveting stage show in one rocking collection. But, the bass player is already talking about making music outside the Red Hot Chili Peppers again with Atoms for Peace, the side project of Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and producer Nigel Godrich.

Last year, Flea toured with Atoms for Peace and then played a fiery set at Coachella, and he says during that time, the gang started to work on their first album, too. “At the end of the tour we went into a studio for three days and just jammed – totally improvising,” Flea told Rolling Stone. “… I have no idea when it’s going to come out. Not real soon though.”

Flea added that many people had a preconceived idea about how he and Yorke would mesh, musically. But, they were wrong. “People always think about him and talk about as this really cerebral artist,” he said. “Especially when we were playing together. People would go, ‘Thom is so cerebral and Flea is just an animal.’ But Thom is the type of musician who doesn’t think at all. He goes totally on feeling and intuition…”

He also says Atoms for Peace, hopefully, will tour again someday: “I imagine that will probably happen. I hope that happens.” With the Peppers currently making plans to tour in support of, I’m With You, and Radiohead eyeing some North American shows next year, we’re guessing the Atoms for Peace jaunt will happen extra far down the line. The Red Hot Chili Peppers also recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of their famed fifth studio album, Blood Sugar Sex Magik.
