Record Store Day Black Friday 2022: Spotlighting Rock and Metal Releases
Local record shops offer plenty of Record Store Day Black Friday releases this season
Black Friday is traditionally one of the biggest shopping days of the year, and Record Store Day is getting in on the madness. For several years now, Record Store Day has launched a variety of special releases on Black Friday, which are available only in your locally-owned, brick-and-mortar record store.
At this point, the numbers are huge. More than 1,400 independent stores in the U.S. are part of Record Store Day’s incentives, as well as at least 1,000 additional ones worldwide. There’s nothing quite like the experience of walking into a local record shop, and this Black Friday event builds on that. During the pandemic, congregating around music was hugely missed, and that included participating in events like Record Store Day.
This year’s offerings, per usual, feature a variety of genres, from rock to pop to hip-hop. In the rock and metal world, you’ll find a selection of offers, especially legacy releases.
In the metal world, you’ll find Black Label Society’s “Skullage,” a comprehensive compilation of Black Label Society’s best albums, available on special vinyl. “A Best Of collection from the band’s early days. Out of print since 2010, and for the first time on colored vinyl for RSD Black Friday,” the official RSD site explains. Another prized metal offering is Kittie’s “Oracle,” arriving on vinyl, their debut vinyl release on clear red vinyl.
In the rock world, The Doors will have 10,000 copies of “Paris Blues” on blue vinyl. As crazy as it is to believe the Doors could have any previously unreleased original compositions out there, there is one, and it’s the title track of this EP. Fleetwood Mac will release “The Alternate Collection” on clear vinyl, limited to 9,000 copies on vinyl and 10,000 on CD, offering a set that features all six of the alternative Fleetwood Mac discs that Rhino/Warner previously released. Red Hot Chili Peppers also have a release out, “Return of the Dream Canteen,” which marks a “special version of the new double-album from Red Hot Chili Peppers. The RSD Black Friday release includes two LPs pressed on neon pink vinyl, an exclusive 24 by 36 poster, and the sleeve printed on silver board,” according to the event’s website.
