Tina Turner Passes Away at 83
Music icon Tina Turner has died at the age of 83
Powerhouse vocalist and musical icon Tina Turner has passed away at the age of 83 after a long illness. Turner is one of the most famous voices in music and known as the “Queen of Rock and Roll.” The soul singer-songwriter, actress and author had numerous hits over the years, her most notable being, “What’s Love Got to Do With It?” The sad Tina Turner death news was confirmed in a statement posted to her official social media accounts on Wednesday (May 24).
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tina Turner,” the social post says. “With her music and her boundless passion for life, she enchanted millions of fans around the world and inspired the stars of tomorrow.” Turner’s family also confirmed the news in a statement to Rolling Stone, saying, she “died peacefully today [May 24] at the age of 83 after a long illness in her home in Küsnacht near Zurich, Switzerland. With her, the world loses a music legend and a role model.”
The American-Swiss singer was born Anna Mae Bullock in Nutbush, Tennessee. She rose to the top of the music world, winning eight Grammy Awards and receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the St Louis Walk of Fame, anong other honors. Turner has also sold more than 100 million records worldwide.
Turner’s autobiography, “I, Tina,” is legendary. The book was made into the “What’s Love Got To Do With It” in 1993, bringing to life her abusive and hurtful relationship with Ike Turner. The film also garnered Angela Bassett a nomination for an Oscar for her performance as Tina in the show.
Following her relationship with Ike, Turner found love gain and got married to her longtime German boyfriend, music executive Erwin Bach, in a Swiss civil ceremony in 2013. She moved to Switzerland in 1994 and lived there up until her death.
Ike passed away in December 2007. At the time, Tina’s issued a statement saying, “Tina is aware that Ike passed away earlier today. She has not had any contact with him in 35 years. No further comment will be made.”
She was in poor health her final years of life. She was diagnosed with intestinal cancer in 2016 and had a kidney transplant in 2017.
