Highly Suspect Go Retro on New Song, ‘Summertime Voodoo’
It’s been a while since we’ve heard new stuff from Highly Suspect, but the hard rock band is back with a new album. Their upcoming set, “As Above, So Below,” will hit stores and streaming services in it entirety July 19. To promote the new tunes, the band has also announced a short summer 2024 U.S. tour in select major markets. They’ve also released a new song, “Summertime Voodoo.”
Highly Suspect, ‘Summertime Voodoo’
So, the new album news is big, but along with the album details, Highly Suspect have also released a new song, “Summertime Voodoo.” If it’s indicative of their album up ahead, you can expect a more straight-ahead, classic rock sound than on their previous material, which was more electronic. The new song is called “Summertime Voodoo,” and that’s also the name of their upcoming tour. “Summertime Voodoo” offers a more classic Highly Suspect style, with a strong psychedelic and stoner rock vibe. It’s not too different from bands such as Queens of the Stone Age or even Kyuss, but with more commercial appeal.
“Summertime Voodoo” also comes with a new music video, with features desert motorcycle footage and some very picturesque shots.
“If my life is a book, then this album is the first chapter that truly addresses the central conflict,” frontman Johnny Stevens said in a press release regarding the new album. “The recognition of an ego, the problems its caused — and the birth of its death. ‘As Above, So Below.’ If I’m being real, I hit rock bottom again. After another close call with death, I feel wide awake. I don’t know how the book ends yet, but I’m very engaged in the plot now. I’d rather it not end at all.”
As for the upcoming tour, Highly Suspect will hit a handful of U.S. cities beginning on July 24 in Memphis, Tennessee, and closing out with an Aug. 2 show in Asbury Park, New Jersey. Other stops include Detroit and Flint, Michigan; St. Louis; and Chicago. A Live Nation ticket pre-sale for the trek begins Thursday (May 16) at 10 a.m. local venue time using the code SOUNDCHECK. General ticket sales kick off Friday (May 17) at 10 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster. In addition to the headlining run, Highly Suspect also have some choice festival dates this summer and fall, including at Louder than Life and Aftershock.
