Best Rock Debut Albums of All Time
There’s something special about a debut album, especially in the rock ‘n’ roll world. The best rock debut albums of all time both kickstarted their bands’ careers and created something that would live on for generations to come. I’ve discovered some of my favorite bands through their debut albums, and I’m sure you have, too. Here are a handful of the best rock debut of all time, in alphabetical order. We also have a feature out about the best heavy metal debut albums ever.
Best Rock Debut Albums
Guns N’ Roses, “Appetite for Destruction”
You’d be hard-pressed to find a better debut album than Guns N’ Roses’ “Appetite for Destruction.” The debut studio album from Slash, Axl Rose and the crew was released on July 21, 1987, by Geffen Records. When it was released, “Appetite for Destruction” didn’t get a ton of attention, but over time, that grew. Today, “Appetite for Destruction” is one of the biggest rock albums ever, and it’s definitely the defining album for Guns N’ Roses. There’s no question it’s one of the best rock debut albums of all time.
Led Zeppelin, “Led Zeppelin”
Some might argue that Led Zeppelin is heavy metal, but I’m including them on this list, because they were really one of the most influential hard rock bands of all time. Their 1969 debut album, “Led Zeppelin,” was groundbreaking at the time. The set, out on Atlantic Records, has hits such as “Dazed and Confused,” “Good Times Bad Times” and “Communication Breakdown” that live on.
Nirvana, “Bleach”
Now, some might argue that grunge should have its own list of the best debut albums, and I’m looking to do that feature at a later date. But, when it comes to debut albums, Nirvana kickstarted the grunge movement with their debut studio album, out on June 15, 1989, via Sub Pop. Of course, Nirvana are known for their sophomore album, “Nevermind,” but without “Bleach,” there never would have been “Nevermind.” “Bleach” was pre-Dave Grohl and featured Chad Channing on drums. Nirvana got enough attention with “Bleach” to get a deal with Geffen for “Nevermind.”
Pearl Jam, “Alive”
Here’s another grunge gem. Unlike Nirvana, Pearl Jam’s most popular album was their debut album, “Ten.” The debut studio album arrived on Aug. 27, 1991, via Epic Records. The set featured former Mother Love Bone members Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard alongside new guitarist Mike McCready and, of course, vocalist Eddie Vedder. It’s certainly one of the best rock debut albums of all time.
The Doors, “The Doors”
The Doors released their debut studio album, “The Doors,” on Jan. 4, 1967, via Elektra Records. It’s one of the earliest rock debuts and was highly influential. The band recorded the album in August of 1966 at Sunset Sound Recorders, in Hollywood, California. They worked on the set with producer Paul A. Rothchild, and the result is a timeless collection of rock songs that never get old.
Van Halen, “Van Halen”
Van Halen’s debut album, “Van Halen,” was never really topped by the band. The set, which arrived on Warner Brothers Records in 1978, featured a ton of longstanding hard rock hits that are still played on the radio today. Songs such as “Eruption,” “You Really Got Me” and “Ain’t Talkin’ ’bout Love” are still among the most popular rock songs of all time.
