With so many Linkin Park reunion rumors swirling, somehow, Deryck Whibley of Sum 41 got brought into the mix. An idea has popped up that Whibley will join Linkin Park for a reunion tour and possibly more. If you think that sounds strange, you’re not the only one. Whibley is coming out to set the record straight.

So, how did this idea come about? Linkin Park has set a countdown clock that ends on Wednesday (Aug. 28), and Sum 41 singer Deryck Whibley has also been teasing his own news that’s dropping, you guessed it, on Wednesday. So, fans of the two saw this similarity, and they announcement, fans of course came to the conclusion that Whibley would be joining Linkin Park on a reunion tour.

So, is it true? The Sum 41 frontman says not so much.

“I feel the need to dispel some current rumors,” the singer posted on his social media accounts. “It’s been brought to my attention that many people think I could be joining a reuniting band. But I just want to say, despite popular belief, I am not joining Oasis… or Linkin Park. Or any other band for that matter.”

Fans have been thinking up all kinds of ideas about what Linkin Park is doing with their countdown clock. Many fans think the band will be reuniting to play some festivals or shows, while others think there might even be new music. The last time the band toured was before vocalist Chester Bennington sadly took his own life in July 2017. They did play one show after that, but it was only a tribute concert.

Whibley sang at that tribute show, which is one of the reasons why fans thought he might be involved. What’s more, on top of performing “The Catalyst” with them at the Bennington tribute concert, he also had Linkin Park co-vocalist Mike Shinoda join Sum 41 onstage for a performance of “Faint” at the 2018 Reading Festival.

What’s funny is that whatever Whibley is teasing, it’s already a bit overshadowed by the Linkin Park. But, at least it will get some more press for him. I hope whatever Whibley and Linkin Park have brewing is big enough to make a splash, because there are some high expectations.

Sun 41’s Farewell Tour

It’s certainly true that Whibley is busy right now, without Linkin Park. Whibley and Sum 41 are scheduled to set off on the final U.S. leg of their farewell tour on Sept. 3 in San Francisco, California. The final fall US leg will end on Oct. 5 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Then, Sum 41’s final show ever will take place on Jan. 30, 2025, in Toronto, Canada. They seem young to retire, since most rock bands seem to be touring with members into their 70s, but I hand it to them for giving it up when they want, on their terms.
