Dave Navarro, Perry Ferrell Speak Out on Jane’s Addiction Fight
Rockers Jane’s Addiction made a big announcement on Monday, September 16, when they told fans that they were going to cancel the remaining tour dates of their current North American tour.
“Due to a continuing pattern of behaviour and the mental health difficulties of our singer Perry Farrell, we have come to the conclusion that we have no choice but to discontinue the current US tour,” they said in the statement.
“Our concern for his personal health and safety as well as our own has left us no alternative. We hope that he will find the help he needs. We deeply regret that we are not able to come through for all our fans who have already bought tickets. We can see no solution that would either ensure a safe environment on stage or reliably allow us to deliver a great performance on a nightly basis.” They signed it, “Our hearts are broken. Dave, Eric and Stephen.”
Perry Ferrell: ‘I Apologize to My Bandmates’
Now, Jane’s Addiction vocalist Perry Ferrell has issued his own statement on his Instagram stories with an apology.
“This weekend has been incredibly difficult and after having the time and space to reflect, it is only right that I apologize to my bandmates, especially Dave Navarro, fans, family and friends for my actions during Friday’s show,” he said. “Unfortunately, my breaking point resulted in inexcusable behavior, and I take full accountability for how I chose to handle the situation.”
During the band’s performance Friday in Boston, Massachusetts, Farrell and guitarist Dave Navarro got into a quarrel onstage. In the end, Ferrell even punched Navarro, ending the show. After Farrell was taken off stage, the remaining band members walked to the front of the stage to thank fans.
On his Instagram stories, Navarro also sent out a message about the incident and tour cancelation, stating, “I would personally like to apologize to @loveandrocketsofficial and @crawlersband and their crews for such a terrible outcome of what started off as an incredibly magical tour.” He added, “@loveandrockets are heroes of mine and I am so grateful I had the opportunity to perform on the same stage as them for as long as I did. It truly has been an honor.”
In a separate post on Instagram, Navarro even shared that he found some comfort about the group’s current state in Walt Whitman’s poetry collection “Leaves of Grass.”
“I was re-reading Whitman’s Leaves of Grass and it occurred to me that there is a strong parallel between his work and that of our own,” he wrote. “The leaves represent the cycle of life and death, yet he continued to work on the body of poems until his own death in 1892. Perhaps he, like us, was unable to fully understand his own work as he continuously tried to re-write, add and expand upon it, willing away his own work’s cycle of life… just as we have.”
He added, “Perhaps it’s simpler to recognize when something is gone and learn from the magical lesson of grief rather than avoid it and remain in a consistent state of dissatisfaction.”
