Rock Band Cancels Farewell Tour Dates Due to Singer Suffering Pneumonia
It’s always a sad thing when a band has to cancel a tour due to illness, but that’s especially true when it’s a band on their farewell tour. One just doesn’t know if they’ll ever get the chance to see them again. But, life happens, and sometimes, it’s inevitable that a group has to cancel some tour dates.
The guys of Sum 41 are currently touring the world on what’s being billed as their farewell tour. The group arrived in Australia, but they won’t be able to perform their scheduled dates due to vocalist Deryck Whibley being diagnosed with pneumonia. Doctors in Australia are treating Whibley now.
Sum 41 Vocalist Has Pneumonia
The chart-topping punk-rock band took to social media to announce the news, sharing in a since-deleted post, “It is with deep sadness and regret that we announce our 2024 Australian tour is unable to proceed.” The band also said they were “beyond excited” to “connect with our Aussie fans once more.” So, it doesn’t sound like they’re planning to do makeup dates in Australia, based on that social media post.
“Now that we’re here though, and under the guidance and direction of multiple Australian doctors, it’s clear that Deryck is too unwell to perform,” they added. “We understand and appreciate your disappointment – we’re gutted too.”
The band had previously called off their Dec. 4 performance in Brisbane because of Whibley getting pneumonia. So, now they’re calling off the whole tour leg.
Sum 41 were also slated to perform Good Things Festival in the coming days, but the festival posted an update about Whibley’s sickness and Sum 41 having to back out of the event.
“Good Things is set to hit Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney this weekend, with a slight tweak to the lineup,” they stated in the post. “Under the guidance and direction of doctors in Australia, it has become clear Sum 41’s Deryck Whibley is too unwell to perform.”
“Sum 41 are gutted they can’t perform, and we fully understand and appreciate fans’ disappointment. Deryck’s health and wellbeing is the focus and priority though, and we hope you will join us in sending him well wishes for his recovery,” they said, also stating that the rest of the lineup is being changed to give fans a good experience.
“The good news is our headliner Korn is ready and raring to go, the sites are built, venues look amazing and our timetable has been shuffled to ensure you have the best day possible,” they explained. “You’ll still be able to catch more than 28 Bands including Violent Femmes, Electric Callboy, Billy Corgan, Mastodon, Kerry King, The Gaslight Anthem, Jet, The Living End, L7 and many more across the weekend.”
This isn’t the first time Whibley has suffered from pneumonia. In 2023, he was hospitalized after coming down with pneumonia.
Right now, Sum 41 are still scheduled to play out their farewell tour. Their next scheduled tour date in January 10 10 in Victoria, British Columbia, and their Canadian dates run through a January 30 stop in Toronto. The group will also be inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame at the 2025 Juno Awards in March. There ceremony will happen in Vancouver. Audio Ink Radio sends our good wishes to Deryck Whibley for a speedy recovery.
