Metallica Drop Big Surprise at L.A. Show
The guys of Metallica are all about charity, as one can tell from their All Within My Hands charity organization. On Friday, December 13, the band performed their fourth Helping Hands Concert and Auction.
The night offered performances by Sammy Hagar, SistaStrings and, of course, Metallica. Complete proceeds from the auction and ticket sales benefited Metallica’s All Within My Hands Foundation, which raises money for different charity partners. Jimmy Kimmel hosted the event, and other special guests included Slash, Tom Morello and more.
Metallica Surprise Crowd at Charity Show
Metallica usually likes to switch things up during these charity concerts, and that’s certainly what they did on Friday. The band surprised the crowd by performing “Low Man’s Lyric” for the first time since 1998. It’s crazy to think that it’s been almost 30 years since the guys did this song live, but it sounded great.
Metallica also performed a brand new version of “Fuel.” Watch both performances below.
As for the other performances, Hagar was joined by his current band of Michael Anthony, Joe Satriani and Kenny Aronoff for the show. The outfit performed a blend of Van Halen, Chickenfoot and Montrose songs, as well as some of Hagar’s solo songs.
The chart-topping metal band offered the crowd two different sets with two very different sounds: one acoustic and one electric. SistaStrings, Avi Vincour and Jeff Ament of Pearl Jam joined them for the show.
Metallica’s All Within My Hands Foundation
The All Within My Hands Foundation was formed in 2017. It’s a “non-profit, philanthropic organization created in 2017 by the members and management of Metallica, dedicated to creating sustainable communities by supporting workforce education, the fight against hunger, and other critical local services,” per the organization’s official site.
As the All Within My Hands Foundation notes, per the USDA’s annual Household Food Insecurity in the United States report out in 2022, more than 44 million people in the US face hunger, including one in five children. “While Metallica has made supporting local food banks a priority for years, the creation of AWMH and our partnerships with Feeding America, World Central Kitchen, and The Farmlink Project have enabled us to take that giving to the next level,” they state.
Back in October, the organization donated $100,000 to Hurricane Milton relief operations.
“The series of storms has strained food bank operations, and our partners at Feeding America need our support,” they noted in an October 2024 post. “Feeding America and local food banks are on the ground before, during, and after a disaster, ensuring those impacted have food and hope during the toughest of times.”
They added, “Between Hurricanes Helene and Milton, Feeding America has deployed 13 truckloads of food, water, and relief supplies to affected food banks along the Gulf Coast. We are granting $50,000 to Feeding America’s national disaster response program providing resources to communities devastated by recent hurricanes.”
It’s heartwarming to see how much good Metallica can do. Who says metal music isn’t good for the heart? They also have a Helping Hands 2024 auction that’s live through January 7. “We’re not just auctioning off Metallica memorabilia – but don’t worry, there’s plenty of that – we’ve got live music VIP experiences, sports memorabilia, fine art, gifts from other musicians, and so much more,” they state.
