It’s always disappointing when a tour gets postponed, no matter the reason, but when that reason is health, all that matters is the health of the musicians involved. Now, the famed Billy Joel has announced that his upcoming tour will be postponed for four months while he deals with a medical condition.

Billy Joel Says His ‘Health Must Come First’

Joel didn’t disclose the nature of that medical condition, but according to a news release, Joel will be having surgery and undergoing physical therapy for some time. Almost all of the impacted concerts have already been rescheduled, except for the tour’s Milwaukee date, including concerts in both the U.S. and U.K. Purchased tickets will automatically be valid for the rescheduled shows.

“While I regret postponing any shows, my health must come first,” Joel said in the statement. “I look forward to getting back on stage and sharing the joy of live music with our amazing fans. Thank you for your understanding.”

The statement also stated, “Billy Joel’s upcoming concert dates will be rescheduled due to a medical condition. The current tour will be postponed for four months to allow him to recover from recent surgery and to undergo physical therapy under the supervision of his doctors. Joel is expected to make a full recovery. The tour will resume at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh on July 5, 2025.”

Billy Joel is ‘Expected to Make a Full Recovery’

Of course, the great news in that statement is that Joel is “expected to make a full recovery.”

Right now, Joel is scheduled to hit to road again starting with a July 5 date in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and a handful of stadium shows with special guests Sting, Stevie Nicks and Rod Stewart. The tour news pushes back gigs scheduled in Toronto, Detroit, Syracuse, Milwaukee, Charlotte and Salt Lake City, plus two dates in the United Kingdom.

It’s worth noting that the news comes just a few weeks after Joel fell onstage during a Feb. 22 concert in Montville, Connecticut. Thankfully, he got right back up on his feet at the gig and kept performing, giving the meaning, “The show must go on” even more importance.

Fnas were quick to flood the social post announcing the Joel news with well-wishes and comments of support. “Get well soon,” one wrote with a red heart emoji, adding, “Hoping you’ll be rocking and rolling in no time.” Another one commented, “The words ‘full recovery’ is what we wanted to see. Get well soon Billy” with an exclamation mark.

Billy Joel, born on May 9, 1949, is known for being a beloved vocalist, pianist and songwriter with many hits from the 1970s and 1980s. “At the age of four, Joel first discovered and became fascinated with classical music, a love that has stayed with him to this day,” the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame notes. “He studied classical piano, but as he progressed, he learned how to turn a favorite Beethoven sonata into a boogie woogie romp.”

According to the Kennedy Center, “‘Piano Man,’ the title track of Joel’s debut album was inspired by real-life experiences during a six-month gig at The Executive Room on Wilshire Boulevard. “
