Carrie Underwood is the darling of country music, but as it turns out, she’s also a fan of some very unexpected music. Underwood, 42, may have made her mark in the music world singing songs such as “Jesus Take the Wheel” and “Before He Cheats,” but during Sunday’s episode of “American Idol,” it was all about nu-metal.

Carrie Underwood Meets Nu-Metal

Nu-metal is a subgenre of heavy metal music that employs drop D tuning, heavy textures and angsty lyrics, often mixing rapping with heavy guitars. Bands such as Korn, Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Deftones and System of a Down are often categorized as nu-metal.

According to Britannica, the genre is “represented by a fusion of heavy metal instrumentation and hip-hop conventions such as rapped lyrics and ‘turntabling.'” Master Class adds, “This heavy metal subgenre was influenced by and contains elements of synth-pop, hardcore punk, jazz, rap metal, groove metal and industrial metal.”

Underwood, a former American Idol champion, appeared on Sunday’s “American Idol” on March 9. Even though she’s long been associated with “American Idol,” this is her first time being a judge on the program. She’s dabbled in the heavy music world before, by the way, at times sharing the stage with ’80s rockers Guns N’ Roses and even recording a song with Jacoby Shaddix and Papa Roach.

An 18-year-old contestant who goes by the name Insite auditioned on the show with the groundbreaking Korn song “Freak on a Leash,” and Underwood was seen mouthing the words and singing along.

The judges weren’t super enthused about Insite’s performance, so Underwood asked the hopeful if there was something softer he could perform for them. He ended up singing the Drowning Pool song “Bodies,” and Underwood ended up getting up off her chair and joining in the fun. It was a really fun segment that was perhaps a bit staged, but either way, it made for an entertaining watch.

Underwood took over the track’s beloved count-off, and Insite sang and screamed his way through the rest of the song. The other judges got into the spirit, too, with Luke Bryan headbanging along and Lionel Richie shredding on air guitar.

It worked, and all of the judges ended up voting “yes” to send him on to the Hollywood rounds.

Following the performance, Drowning Pool released a new lyric video for “Bodies,” which is almost 25 years old at this point.

“Released on June 5, 2001, ‘Sinner’ (the album ‘Bodies’ was on) went platinum the same year, and ‘Bodies’ remains one of the band’s most popular tracks,” a press statement about the lyric video reads. “As the album approaches its 25th anniversary, Drowning Pool is continuing to maintain their place in rock history with an exciting lineup of new releases and live shows.”

The statement adds, “‘Bodies’ remains an enduring anthem, not just for Drowning Pool but for metal culture as a whole. Its legacy lives on, inspiring new generations of fans… The song’s timeless appeal transcends generations, resonating with both the seasoned and the fresh-faced.”
