Black Sabbath has been a band since the late 1960s, so it is obvious that they have enjoyed a successful run. Not many bands make it past the 10-year mark, let alone be together, in one form or another, for more than 50 years. Now, the metal legends are coming up on their final show ever, which is set for July 5, billed as “Back to the Beginning,” at the band’s Villa Park in Birmingham. The show will not only feature Black Sabbath playing their final concert ever but also welcome a collection of the biggest names in rock and metal to pay tribute to the band and longtime vocalist Ozzy Osbourne.
Ahead of the show, plenty of members of Black Sabbath are doing press to drum up excitement for their final hurrah. Not that they need to, because people are already stoked for this show.
Speaking with the Guardian in a May 2 interview, bass player Geezer Butler revealed his biggest wish for the final concert, as well as some anxieties he is having about it.
“I’m already having palpitations. In fact, I had a nightmare last night,” he said. “I dreamed everything went wrong on stage and we all turned to dust. It’s important that we leave a great impression, since it’s the final time that people will experience us live. So, it has to be great on the night.”
So, Butler’s No. 1 goal is to “leave a great impression” with attendees, both those watching in person and around the world.
In that same interview, Osbuorne said that he was done with the “rock star lifestyle.” That should come as no surprise, since he’s been dealing with health issues for years now and is 76 years old. It would be difficult to party hard at that age and with health problems.
“I’d love to say ‘never say never,’ but after the last six years or so … it is time,” he told the outlet. “I lived on the road for 50-odd years, and I’ve kind of got used to not picking up my bags and getting on the bus again. I don’t smoke dope or do any of the rock star lifestyle any more. I’m kind of like a homebody.”
Osbourne also said that he is quite the homebody and has been for a few years now. “I never go out. I never hang out in bars – I don’t drink,” he said. “So what … is out there for me?”
He added, “I hate going shopping with my wife. I feel like stabbing myself in the neck after half an hour. But it’s time for me to spend some time with my grandkids, I don’t want to die in a hotel room somewhere. I want to spend the rest of my life with my family.”
In the interview, Osbourne was also very honest with his followers about what to expect from the show, stating that Black Sabbath will only play “a couple of songs each. I don’t want people thinking, ‘We’re getting ripped off’, because it’s just going to be … what’s the word? … a sample, you’re going to get a few songs each by Ozzy and Sabbath.”
