Even though rock stars are really only personally known by their small circle of friends and family, for fans, it may seem like they know these guys, and gals, on a personal level. Especially when that rock band has been around for a long time and has released a lot of heartfelt music, it can seem like they’re actually a member of the family. That’s why it’s so sad when a famed musician announces personal troubles, especially when those have to do with health.
Now, the vocalist of one of the biggest rock bands from the 1990s and 2000s has announced that he unfortunately is dealing with health issues. But, he’s not backing down.
On Wednesday, May 7, 3 Doors Down vocalist Brad Arnold released a video message in which he announced that he has been diagnosed with clear cell renal cell carcinoma, a form of kidney cancer.
According to the Mayo Clinic, “In adults, renal cell carcinoma is the most common type of kidney cancer.” The Mayo Clinic adds that, “The number of kidney cancers diagnosed each year seems to be increasing” but that “one reason for this may be the fact that imaging techniques such as CT scans are being used more often.” The Cleveland Clinic adds that, “Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is the most common type of kidney cancer. Treatment includes surgery, immunotherapy and other therapies.”
“Hey, everybody, it’s Brad from 3 Doors Down,” Arnold stated in his video message. “I hope you’re having a great day today. I’ve got some not-so-good news for you today. So I’d been sick a couple of weeks ago and then went to the hospital and got checked out and had actually got the diagnosis that I had clear cell renal carcinoma that had metastasized into my lung. And it’s stage four, and that’s not real good.”
Arnold added, “But you know what? We serve a mighty God, and he can overcome anything. So I have no fear. I really, sincerely am not scared of it at all.”
Arnold also announced that 3 Doors Down will have to cancel their summer tour due to his diagnosis and said that he and the band are “sorry for that.” He also asked for prayers from fans.
“I’d love for you to lift me up in prayer every chance you get,” he added in the message. “And I think it is time for me to maybe go listen to [3 Doors Down’s 2008 song] ‘It’s Not My Time’ a little bit. Thank you, guys, so much. God loves you. We love you. See you.” The staff of Audio Ink Radio sends Arnold our prayers for a speedy recovery.
In 2020, Arnold was kind enough to speak with Audio Ink Radio about the 20th anniversary of “The Better Life” album from 3 Doors Down.” There was a lot of rock music around, but– there were a lot of different genres of rock music around, but I think the door was wide open for just some straight-ahead rock ‘n’ roll to come up through.”
He added, “But, at the same time, (there was) enough attention on rock ‘n’ roll for rock ‘n’ roll bands to be successful. It’s kind of hard for rock bands right now, because rock is a very small market. I’m really thankful that we came around when we did that day, in 2000. It was a lot of perfect timing.”
